What is Hyvä Theme and Why Every Magento Store Should Know About It
The frontend revolution Magento 2 needed — and why your store might be missing out
If you run a Magento 2 store and someone mentions “Hyvä Theme” — and you’re not sure what it means — you’re not alone. It’s one of those things that developers get excited about but rarely explain properly to store owners.
So let me break it down in plain English. No jargon. No fluff. Just what it is, why it matters, and whether you need it.
First — What’s Wrong With the Default Magento Theme?
Magento 2 ships with a default theme called Luma. It works. But it’s slow.
The reason is technical but worth understanding: Luma was built using old JavaScript tools called RequireJS and KnockoutJS. These tools were popular back in 2014. Today, they’re considered heavy, outdated, and a nightmare to work with.
Every time someone visits your Magento store running Luma, their browser has to download and process a massive amount of JavaScript — even for simple things like showing a product image or opening the cart.
We’ve seen stores with PageSpeed scores as low as 28 out of 100. That directly hurts your SEO and your conversions — often without the store owner even realising it.
BEFORE — LUMA STACK
- RequireJS (heavy)
- KnockoutJS (outdated)
- LESS + XML layouts
- PageSpeed ~28–40
- Slow to customise
- Hard to maintain
AFTER — HYVÄ STACK
- Alpine.js (lightweight)
- Tailwind CSS (modern)
- PHP + Events system
- PageSpeed ~85–96
- Fast to customise
- Clean, readable code
So What is Hyvä Theme?
Hyvä (pronounced “hoo-vah” — it’s Finnish for “good”) is a completely new frontend theme for Magento 2, built by a Dutch developer named Willem Wigman in 2021.
Instead of using the old Luma stack, Hyvä uses two modern, lightweight tools:
- Alpine.js — a tiny JavaScript framework. Think of it as JavaScript that doesn’t make your browser cry.
- Tailwind CSS — a utility-first CSS framework that keeps your stylesheets small and your UI fast.
That’s it. No RequireJS. No KnockoutJS. No bloated JavaScript bundles. The result is a Magento store that loads the way it should have always loaded.
What Kind of Speed Difference Are We Talking About?
Real numbers from real projects:
We recently worked on a Magento store where the checkout page took 4.2 seconds to load on mobile. After migrating to Hyvä, it loaded in 1.4 seconds. The store saw an 18% increase in mobile conversions within the first month.
That’s not a coincidence. Speed and conversions are directly connected.
Why Does PageSpeed Matter So Much?
Two reasons:
1. Google uses it as a ranking signal
Since Google’s Core Web Vitals update, page speed is a direct SEO factor. A store scoring 30 on PageSpeed is getting pushed down in search results compared to a faster competitor. You could have better products at better prices and still lose the click.
2. Customers don’t wait
Studies consistently show that 53% of mobile users leave a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. In e-commerce, every second of delay costs you sales. Hyvä fixes both problems in one move.
Is Hyvä Only for Developers, or Does It Affect My Store Visually?
This is a good question. Hyvä is a frontend theme, so yes — it changes how your store looks too. But in a good way.
The Hyvä base theme gives you a clean, modern, fast storefront. From there, you can customise it to match your brand completely. The difference is that customising Hyvä is far easier and faster than customising Luma, because the code is cleaner and more straightforward.
Most developers who’ve worked with both will tell you: building on Hyvä takes half the time of building on Luma, and the output is significantly better.
Who is Hyvä Right For?
Hyvä makes sense if:
- Your Magento store has a PageSpeed score below 60
- You’re seeing high bounce rates, especially on mobile
- You’re planning a redesign anyway
- Your developers are complaining about how hard the frontend is to work with
- You want better SEO rankings without migrating to a different platform
It might not make sense if:
- You’re on a very tight budget and your current store is performing fine
- You heavily depend on niche extensions that haven’t added Hyvä support yet
What About Third-Party Extensions?
This is the most common concern we hear, and it’s a fair one.
When Hyvä first launched in 2021, many popular Magento extensions didn’t support it. You’d need custom compatibility modules to make them work — which added time and cost to every migration.
In 2026, the situation is much better. Most major extension vendors now ship Hyvä-compatible versions. The community around Hyvä is one of the most active in the Magento world, and compatibility has improved significantly.
Important: Before any migration, always audit your current extension list to check compatibility. It’s a step you should never skip — and it’s the first thing we do in any Hyvä project.
How Long Does a Hyvä Migration Take?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s a rough guide based on projects we’ve handled:
| Store Type | Estimated Timeline | Main Factor |
|---|---|---|
| Simple store, few customisations | 2–4 weeks | Extension count |
| Medium store, some custom modules | 4–8 weeks | Custom frontend work |
| Complex store, many extensions | 8–16 weeks | Compatibility audit + rebuild |
The main variables are: how many third-party extensions you have, how much custom frontend work exists in your current theme, and how complex your checkout flow is.
Should You Migrate to Hyvä?
If you’re running Magento 2 and you care about performance, SEO, and giving customers a fast experience — then yes, Hyvä is worth serious consideration.
It’s not a magic button. A migration requires proper planning, a skilled development team, and careful testing. But the outcome — a faster, more maintainable, better-ranking Magento store — is consistently worth the investment.
We’ve done several Hyvä migrations at CodeAtoZ and the before-and-after numbers speak for themselves every time.
